“But I am scared!” Jeff shouted.

“Please have enough love for your brother to think this through!” His father replied, “We just don't have the time to stop. And I don't know if I can make it without stopping every so often. While you're only ten, you're strong and fast. Do you remember the way back from here to the road, if you had to go alone?”

Jeff turned and made the final climbing-up toward the road. When he reached it, he rested himself, breathless. “Can't stop,” he thought. “Mark’s in big trouble Keep going.” Just as he pulled himself upright, a truck sped by, heading for Flint " Hey!” he shouted excitedly, waving both arms. The truck stopped, "Jump in, boy! What’s up? "The driver asked, Jeff got in and explained. Immediately the driver reached for his cell phone. “Help! Help! Better get the helicopter in there,” he seemed to be shouting into his hand. But Jeff wasn’t sure about that because everything got unclear and then went black and quiet.

Hours later, Jeff opened his eyes to find himself in a hospital, with his father nearby. His father told him that the helicopter airlifted Mark to the hospital and he would be fine in a few days. His father hiked himself out of that valley and took a ride from someone to the town. “You’re a hero, son,” his father finally said with a smile. “ You saved Mark.”

This year’s flu season is pretty scary. To try to minimize the effects, public officials are still urging anyone who hasn’t yet gotten their flu shot to get one as soon as possible. However, even if every single person got a shot in the arm, the vaccine(疫苗)--- with its excellent 36 percent effectiveness---would not prevent everyone from getting infected with the annoying virus. Knowledge is power, so here's what goes on in your body when you come down with the flu.

The influenza virus primarily attacks your nose, throat, and the tubes that lead to your lungs. But the flu is so much more than that. Your muscles ache, your head hurts, and your appetite goes down, among other things. To our surprise, almost all of these symptoms have less to do with the virus itself than with your immune(免疫的)response to them. Unfortunately, the very defense you have in place to ge rid of the flu is the reason you feel so painful when you recover.

The virus usually enters through your mouth, typically by way of your hands But it takes a few days for symptoms to set in. While this process might cause some harm to your nose and throat, it's nothing major, and nothing like the symptoms that typically accompany a bad or even mild case of the flu.

The real fun starts when your immune system begins to fight. Your immune system comes in two parts: the innate system and the adaptive. The innate immune system is essentially an all-purpose tool. As soon as your body senses the presence of any injury or invader (入侵者), the innate immune system launches into action by producing tiny proteins called cytokines and chemokines. The cytokines reproduce almost immediately and start to attack the virus. This increase in immune cells creates an serious inflammation(炎癥) throughout the body. But the worst is still to come. Meanwhile, the chemokines work with the adaptive immune system to help create T cells. These cells are a special type of white blood cell that works in a much more specific way: They find the influenza virus, identify what's special about it, and create something unique on their surface that finds and destroys similar invaders.

            28. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

            A. All the vaccine is not effective.

            B. No one can avoid catching this year's flu.

            C. This year's flu is the most serious one in recent years.

            D. Public health officials have to use a gun when necessary.

            29. Why many parts of your body suffer while you're recovering from a flu?

            A. Because recovery from illness is painful.

            B. Because your immune system is working against your defense system.

            C. Because your body is fighting hard against the flu.

            D. Because the influenza virus attacks your nose, throat and other parts.

            30. The underlined word “fun” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by .

            A. joy

            B. battle

            C. action

            D. program

            31. What's the main idea of Paragraph 4?

            A. The fight between innate immune system and the adaptive.

            B. The categories of immune system.

            C. The way immune system works.

            D. The process of the development of immune system.

For Pei Shiyou, this year's Lunar New year's Eve was among the few he ha spent with his extended family.

“It’s one of the benefits of starting a business in my hometown,” said Pei, who was born and raised in Hefei, Anhui province, and will soon turn 60. His wish for the Year of the Dog is to see smart glass--- the product his team has been developing since 2016---go into production.

Starting a business with a creative research team and receiving government support have given him a strong sense of pride, a feeling he says he often lacked during his 25 years working in the United States, he said.

He was among Chinas first students to travel to the US for postgraduate stud After that, he landed his first job at Amoco Corp and later moved to California eventually becoming head of product research and development at KLA-Tencor, a global capital equipment company in Silicon Valley. Yet Pei said he still felt unfulfilled and unsatisfied.

“It seemed there was an invisible ceiling for me when I pursued my career in the US. I felt like it was unlikely for me to achieve any higher sense of achievement or recognition.”

He returned to China in 2017, and nine years later established a smart-glass company in Hefei with two other US-trained engineers.

The company’s product is suitable for low-temperature, flexible smart-film manufacturing and is able to self-adjust its level of transparency based on temperature changes and sunlight conditions, according to Pei, who said it has the potential to reduce the need for air conditioning and make curtains abandoned.

Between 2007 and 2016, Pei lived and worked in several Chinese cities. “What attracts me to Hefei is that it is easy to gather tech talents here due to the city’s rapid development in recent years, and also because it has several universities,” he said. Support from the local government has been one of the best attractions that convinced Pei to locate his company in the eastern Chinese city.

In January last year, Hefei was approved as the site of a national-level science center, the second of its kind after an earlier one was built in Shanghai. The center, now under construction, will focus on areas including information technology, energy and health.

            32. Why did Pei Shiyou start a business in China?

            A. Because of his unsuccessful business in America.

            B. Because his career was blocked by something invisible.

            C. Because his family desperately wants him to chase roots.

            D. Because of a sense of accomplishment from his creative team and official support.

            33. What’s one of the functions of the smart glass?

            A. To be filmed as a high tech model.

            B. To adjust transparency according to the surrounding temperature.

            C. To replace the use of air conditioners.

            D. To be used as a kind of new curtain.#p#副標(biāo)題#e#

            D. He has the support from the local government of the US.

            35. What is the best title for the text?
